
A Republican Congresswoman and Harvard alum sharply condemned the college as an emblem of “educational rot” after the college pushed again towards calls for from the Trump administration.
Following the October 7, 2023, Hamas assault on Israel, political tensions flared throughout American campuses, with Harvard drawing explicit scrutiny for the way it dealt with pro-Palestinian activism and free speech debates.
Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.), a 2006 graduate of Harvard, turned one of the establishment’s most vocal critics, accusing the college of failing to uphold ethical and educational requirements, the college’s scholar newspaper the Harvard Crimson reported. Tensions intensified when the Trump administration allegedly pressured Harvard and different universities, a transfer seen by some as politically motivated interference.
Stefanik escalated her criticism on social media, denouncing Harvard’s determination to withstand the Trump administration’s efforts as emblematic of deep-seated points in increased schooling.
“Harvard College has rightfully earned its place as the epitome of the ethical and educational rot in increased schooling,” she posted on X, additionally calling for the elimination of federal funding to the college.
In the meantime, Harvard’s refusal to conform was praised by outstanding progressives like Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, who framed the college’s stance as a daring protection of constitutional and institutional independence.
Whereas the White Home and key federal businesses have remained silent on attainable subsequent steps, questions loom over whether or not authorized or monetary penalties may observe.
