Canada’s new consulate in Greenland is officially open.
The consulate has been working quietly for a number of weeks however Gov. Gen. Mary Simon and Overseas Affairs Minister Anita Anand are in Greenland’s capital Nuuk for the ceremonial opening at this time.
Anand raised a Canadian flag on the consulate and other people gathered spontaneously sang O Canada, whereas they waved each Canadian and Greenland flags.

Ottawa first pledged to launch the new diplomatic mission in December 2024, effectively earlier than U.S. President Donald Trump escalated his threats to annex the Danish territory.
Anand says the importance of the new consulate exhibits Canada standing collectively with Greenland and Denmark on defence, safety, financial resilience and local weather change.
Greenland is an autonomous island territory of Denmark and Prime Minister Mark Carney has repeatedly stated any selections about Greenland’s future are as much as the individuals of Greenland and Denmark.
