In France’s overseas departments, Creole language and tradition are seen as a bulwark towards racism and standardisation. The idea of “Créoleness” was developed within the late Eighties, within the wake of Aimé Césaire’s writings on Négritude and Edouard Glissant’s notion of “Antillanité”, or a particularly Caribbean identification. Our reporters Florence Gaillard and Georges Yazbeck travelled to Martinique to listen to from those that embody this advanced identification.
