The distinguished Abel Prize for arithmetic was on Wednesday awarded to Japanese mathematician Masaki Kashiwara a specialist in algebraic evaluation, illustration concept, and sheaf concept.
The 78-year-old mathematician was honoured for “his elementary contributions to algebraic evaluation and illustration concept, particularly the event of the idea of D-modules and the invention of crystal bases,” the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters stated.
D-modules supplied a “new foundation for learning programs of linear differential equations”, in line with the jury.
Named after the Norwegian mathematician Niels Henrik Abel (1802-1829), the Abel Prize was created by Norway’s authorities, partly in a bid to compensate for the dearth of a Nobel prize in arithmetic.
