
Guwahati, April 16: Assam Police have arrested seven youths for allegedly pelting stones at safety personnel throughout an anti-Waqf protest rally in Silchar final week.
Assam authorities has maintained a zero-tolerance coverage towards demonstrations towards the Waqf legislation reforms.

In response to police sources, a late-night operation was carried out in the Bagadahar and Kashipur areas underneath Silchar Police Station jurisdiction. In the course of the operation, seven people suspected of involvement in the violence had been apprehended and have since been remanded to judicial custody.

The incident occurred on April 13, when roughly 300 folks gathered at Berenga village in Cachar district and started marching towards Silchar city to protest towards the amended Waqf Act. As the group moved ahead, police intervened and tried to cease the procession. A light lathi cost was carried out to disperse the group, after which the group scattered.

In reference to the incident, a case was registered at Silchar Police Station (Case No. 401/25) underneath a number of sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) — Sections 191(2), 191(3), 190, 223, 125, 132, and 121(1) & 121(2) — together with Part 3 of the Prevention of Harm to Public Property (PDPP) Act.
