FIFA has introduced that it’ll contemplate a proposal to increase the 2030 World Cup to 64 groups, SportsRation stories.
The 2030 event will mark the one hundredth anniversary of the World Cup and can be hosted by Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay set to host three matches.
The World Cup was elevated from 32 to 48 groups for the 2026 event, which can be held within the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
A FIFA spokesperson instructed Reuters, “A proposal to think about a 64-team World Cup to rejoice the centenary in 2030 was introduced up by a FIFA Council member in the course of the ‘miscellaneous’ agenda merchandise on the FIFA Council assembly on March 5, 2025.”
“The concept was famous, as FIFA is required to look into any proposals from its Council members.”
It’s believed that the suggestion to increase was made by Ignacio Alonso, a consultant from Uruguay.
