The nation’s second-largest telecom operator, Bharti Airtel (Airtel), has formally approached the government to convert its deferred dues into equity underneath the 2021 Telecom Reforms bundle, in search of a stage enjoying area.
The Sunil Bharti Mittal-led firm has approached the Division of Telecommunications (DoT), urgent for equitable software of the equity conversion clause.
The transfer comes within the wake of the government elevating its stake in Vodafone Thought to over 49 per cent lately.
Vodafone Thought’s spectrum liabilities have been transformed into equity in March by the Centre, rising the government’s stake within the firm to 49 per cent from 22.6 per cent earlier. The Centre transformed ₹36,950 crore of Vodafone Thought’s excellent spectrum public sale dues into equity.
“All firms can apply as per the reforms bundle. The government will take a choice after correctly evaluating the request, and any new equity conversion will probably be selected a case-by-case foundation,” government sources mentioned on Thursday.
In March, Airtel had pay as you go ₹5,985 crore to the DoT, clearing its liabilities from the 2024 spectrum auctions and lowering its spectrum-related debt to ₹52,000 crore.
