Former Northwestern College president Morton Schapiro withdrew from his settlement to talk on the Georgetown College Law Middle graduation, the Georgetown Voice reported. Interim dean Joshua Teitelbaum shared the information with college students Wednesday.
“Prior to now week, numerous regulation college students raised issues about Dr. Schapiro as graduation speaker, due primarily to opinion essays he revealed on Israel and Palestine within the aftermath of October 7, 2023,” Teitelbaum wrote. “After independently studying of the scholars’ issues, Dr. Schapiro knowledgeable me that he regretfully has determined to say no our invitation to talk at graduation.”
College students started talking out in opposition to his look when it was introduced two weeks in the past. In a petition that garnered 285 signatures, college students mentioned Schapiro holds “controversial, Zionist, and dangerous opinions.” Schapiro has since 2023 written a column on religion, politics and Jewish identification for the Jewish Journal. In a single column, he referred to as Jews who condemn the state of Israel “helpful idiots,” a time period attributed to Vladimir Lenin to explain “those that sow the seeds of their very own destruction by supporting adversaries who search their demise,” Schapiro wrote.
Teitelbaum additionally shared with college students a letter from Schapiro about his resolution.
